Lizzie was the daughter of Agnes Keckley and Agnes' master Armistead Burwell of Dinwiddie, VA. Lizzie became an accomplished seamstress with famous clientelle. She worked on Mary Todd Lincoln's inaugural ball gown. The First Lady was so impressed with her skills that she hired Lizzie as her personal seamstress, later becoming a personal friend and confidant of the First Lady.
