The Mississippi River was a lifeline for the Confederate Army with forts along the river to protect it against Union domination. After many battles only two forts remained, Vicksburg, and Port Hudson, Louisiana. President Lincoln called Vicksburg "the key" to winning the war. Vicksburg was surrendered to Grant on July 4th. Five days later troops at Port Hudson, surrendered splitting the Confederacy in half.
